[Week 13] Stalybridge St. Pauls 2nd XI vs High Lane 2nd XI

Stalybridge St. Paul's CC 2nd XIWith some stirling work getting the ground in a state where there could be a game on, for the first time in a month, Brian Stone won the toss, and put 10 man (later to be 11) High Lane into bat, with opener Chris Simpson in the crease for 50 minutes, being dismissed for 11, to say it was a slow start would be an understatement, however his removal brought youngster Patrick Firth into bat, who despite being dropped three times, all during Faz Hussains bowling overs, managed a decent 64 runs to bring the pace up a good amount, to finish with H Anjan and Z Choudhary with 30 and 20 not out each to end the innings 174 for 5, unfortunately the Stalybridge bowlers were having an off-day, with only Pete Coxon putting in a notable performance with 2-29 off his regulation twelve (though he missed out on his hat-trick that had been waiting to be played for 4 weeks).

The same two ending batters opened the bowling for High Lane, but it was their main batsman Patrick Firth (2-25) and fellow spin bowler Mark Short (4-45) who frustrated the Stalybridge batsmen, keeping the run rate below 3 an over for the majority of the game, when 7 was needed, though the debutant Krunal Bhatt managed a last ditched battle at the end with Mark Connolly (who hit a 6 for crying out loud!) returning for the first time this season with 28 and 17 not out respectively; another notable mention for Pete Coxon’s 30 off 32.

In the end though, due to a combination of reasons, primarily the on-the-spot bowling from Firth and Short, but 6 dropped catches would be definitely high on the blame scale, Stalybridge unfortunately couldn’t make up the needed runs to catch High Lane, finishing 15 short, ending 159 for 7.

IMG_1572I wouldn’t like to be keeper Anthony Hunter though, greeting his missus with this on his return home, on her birthday no-less…
