[Week 15] Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI vs Compstall CC 2nd XI

Stalybridge St. Paul's CC 2nd XIBatters bowled well, bowlers bowled well, the opposition… well…

Despite being turned over by 118 runs at their place at the start of the season, the return fixture was a massively one-sided affair in the opposite direction.  After losing the toss and being put into bat, openers Mike Whitworth and Alex Wilde were aggressive from the outset, with Mike being caught behind for 51 from 54 balls,  and Alex with 31 from 55, but the introduction of returning Joe Robinson with Mike’s dismissal put another 73 runs on the board; it was during Joe’s innings that he belted a cover drive, which captain Neil Cooper foolishly tried to catch, and injured his thumb in the process, causing him to leave the field for 20 or so overs to recuperate. Coupled with 24 from Pete Coxon and 18 a-piece from Mike Hatton and Mudi Bashir, saw the home side finish their 45 overs with a commanding lead of 238 for 7 wickets.

The aggression didn’t subside after tea (lovely btw Gaz’s missus) when the bowlers coming out full on samosas and chicken tikka, with Pete Coxon taking just 5 balls of his first over to start the visitors demise with the dismissal of #2 batsman Dave Carne, but had to wait until the 10th over before taking the next wicket of fellow opener Jarrod Ince; from that point forward however, it was just a rout with Compstall unable to form a lasting partnership, and with the young bowler James Chew’s removal on 21, it took Madussar Bashir and Pete Coxon just 5 more overs to dismantle the remaining batting order, with 7 batsmen falling for 0 runs, finishing with just 6 more runs to end up 27 all out.

Result: Stalybridge St. Paul’s win by 211 runs.
